A super fun Melbourne wedding

Here’s a few favourites from my close friends Lauren and Warren’s wedding in Melbourne.  I met Warren about 10 years ago in London and we’ve been mates ever since. Woz is a down to earth, genuine, honest bloke who I really look up to. He also has the most contagious laugh, which is super handy at parties as you can always find him no matter how crowded the room.

Lauren is a perfect match for Woz. She keeps him in line but always does so with a smile on her face :)
She’s smart, funny, very sweet AND looked absolutely stunning in her wedding dress.

My aim for the day as with every wedding, was to try and capture true emotion and really tell the story of the day through my photos. They’re a happy, fun and cheeky couple, so I wanted the images to reflect that.

It absolutely bucketed down when we went off to do the couples portraits. Made for some cool atmospheric images though. For this one we had about 5 umbrellas going, covering flash units etc. Thankfully the couple stayed reasonably dry. Can’t say the same for myself but was all worth it!

Scott, delivering his best man speech. Notice the image in the background? Warren’s face on Justin Bieber’s body. Hilarious. Had the entire room keeled over.

Nana was so cute. I love moments like these.

Thanks again for having me there Woz and Loz. Was an honour to be there and has ended up being one of the best weddings I’ve ever had the privilege of photographing.

Big love,
Damo

Whitney and Zaylia Cosmetics

Am out in Australia at the moment and decided to get a shoot in while I’m here. Many people involved in this but a huge thank you to Antoinette from Zaylia Cosmetics who helped me tremendously with the organisation.

It was a super hot day and we got eaten by mosquitos, green ants, and not to mention the sun. Also had loads of gear to carry over sand (no rolling the cases like we normally can…) so a big thanks to my assistants for the day Becky and Taylor. Got some great photos though so was all worth it in the end :)

Model: Whitney – Mirror Mirror Agencies
Make up: Antoinette Turner
Assistants (via Brisbane Camera Hire): Becky Bligh and Taylor Scott

Thanks again team for all your help on the day.

Cheers,
Damian

A Canadian Wedding

Elissa and Steve flew me out to Canada to photograph their wedding at Foxwood Resort, which is on the Lake of Bays in Muskoka. This was my first trip to Canada and what a beautiful introduction. With Elissa being Australian and Steve being Portuguese/Canadian, whilst also having spent many years living in London, the guest list was truly an international one!

Foxwood’s was the perfect venue for them, as it was right on a lake, with cabins close by and a very Canadian feel to it. I didn’t see any bears (thankfully/unfortunately? Not sure..!) but the invited guests certainly made up for that. Everyone was super friendly and I felt like part of the family by the time I left (thanks for making me feel so welcome :) ).

Here’s some favourites from the weekend. The night before Cam was cooking up the most amazing corn I’ve ever had in my life. Straight from the farm and cooked skin on, on the bbq

Proof of how juicy the corn was. Check the spray flying out on the left

I noticed father and son playing down by the lake, so couldn’t resist running down to grab a few photos while the lighting was perfect

Onto the wedding day. The boys enjoying a beer before the ceremony

The girls did not stop cracking me up all day. I will forever remember clock face (sorry, way too long to explain that one).

Elissa looked gorgeous of course

Elissa and her brother Simon. Top bloke and super athlete. He some how managed to swim out to the island across the bay. Yes. In Canada. Where the water was freezing. Oh and on Sunday too, after a night of heavy drinking at the wedding. Madness.

Elissa’s parents flew out from Australia as well. Love those guys. I pretty much felt adopted by them by the end of the weekend. The wedding was perfect with amazing weather and loads of smiling faces

After the ceremony, Steve and Lis on the end of the dock sitting in Muskoka chairs (yes Muskoka has their own chair’s and they’re unbelievably comfortable).

We shot this on a merry-go-round. All 3 of us jumped on and got it spinning. Poor Lis wasn’t coping too well so we had to stop. Quick check of the images and I hadn’t got the shot I was after, so back on we went.. Absolute trooper Lis. Thanks for agreeing to spin back the other way “to balance things out”. I think the shot was worth it though as it’s a really different take on the couples portrait.

The reception was lovely. Great food, wine and people.

Spot the Australian’s ;) Here’s the girls busting out to Nutbush City Limits

Thanks again Steve and Lis for flying me out to be the photographer for your wedding. Such an honour and I genuinely appreciate it. Hope you love the photos! xx

A wedding in Tuscany

I’ve just returned from my close friends Cam and Nicki’s wedding in Tuscany. What an absolutely beautiful place. Had such amazing time and really did not want to leave! Stunning weather, rolling hills, simple flavoursome food, great friends and definitely no shortage of wine. What else do you need?!

We were staying at Sant’ Antonio, a converted 12th century monastery near Montepulciano. Sant’ Antonio is owned and run by Nico, by far the nicest and most helpful chap in all of Italy! Nico and his team went over and above the call of duty so many times to ensure the week went perfectly. If you’re looking for a great place to get away for a week I can whole heartedly recommend checking with Nico and seeing when he has availability (the place is usually booked out well in advance).

Here’s me and Nico. Points for guessing which ones which ;)

The town of Montepulciano has a festival once a year which involves a parade, bit of flag throwing and a barrel race, where teams of 2 push a barrel up hill around the town centre.

After the barrel racing there’s lots of drinking

If I was to move to Italy, I’d have to buy a dog

Though not sure it’d be getting my gelati…

Everything is so effortlessly picturesque. Was actually pretty hard to take a bad photo.

Of course while we were there we had to do a bit of wine tasting. Here’s our adorable wine expert Martina giving us the tour of Ciacci Piccolomini D’Aragona.

Their Pianrosso (a 2003 Brunello) is absolutely superb.

Now as for the actual wedding itself that we were all there for, unfortunately don’t have any photos to share. I was best man so couldn’t carry a camera! Here’s me and Paul, another good mate who was MC for the wedding. This is a few hours after the wedding and Paul had just been for a midnight swim the crazy man.

The next day we did a sneaky shot for the bride and groom with our place holders from the night before. Nicki (the bride) had made one up for every guest for the wedding, complete with a silly pic on the outside and menu on the inside. Such a cool idea to make things a bit more personal.

So yes Tuscany is an absolutely magical place. Will no doubt be heading back there again. To finish, here’s the sunset from Sant’ Antonio on our last night (which of course a group of us had to share a couple of bottles of red together as we watched it happen). What a perfect way to end a perfect week.

Congratulations Cam and Nicki and thanks for having me as your best man. Seriously an honour.

Sunday Session

The day after the wedding, Dani’s parents hosted a Sundowner at their place in Shoalwater. Brilliant spot, literally across the road from the beach and being on the west coast, home to a brilliant sunset almost every day! Not a bad life really?

Anyway I couldn’t resist the opportunity to grab a few shots as the sun went down and here’s the results. To bring out the colour of the sky, I underexposed the ambient light dramatically:

Next, I corrected for the now very dark couple in the foreground by using a wirelessly triggered flash through a portable softbox. Here’s the legendary Brad Htoon (one of Perth’s finest graphic designers) keeping the flash high and counterbalancing perfectly with a cold beverage. Nice work!

Here’s the final result. The combination of flash and ambient really makes the couple pop and creates some beautiful background colour.

I love shooting with natural light too, so we did both, but you just don’t get the same colour impact without the off camera flash and very helpful assistants (Big thanks to Adam, Dani, Brad and Rochelle!)
